Platelet Rich Plasma Therapy (PRP)

Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) is the portion of the plasma fraction from whole blood. This fraction contains high concentrations of platelets and growth factors. The alpha granules within the platelets are responsible for promoting cell regeneration, proliferation and soft tissue remolding. Since the PRP injection is created from your own blood there are few side effects and very rarely allergic reactions. It is very safe. The most common injection side effects are burning, redness, swelling and bruising. The treatment starts with a blood draw, similar to getting blood drawn for labs, and is collected in a specific vial. Next the blood vial is placed in a centrifuge and spun at intensely high speeds causing the blood to separate into several layers. The PRP is withdrawn and used for several treatments.

PRP for Hair Loss and Stimulation of Hair Growth

PRP is injected into areas of hair loss to stimulate new hair growth including increased hair strand thickness and increased hair density. PRP for hair loss works by stimulating dormant or inactive hair follicles. Since the PRP injection is created from your own blood there are few side effects and very rarely any allergic reactions. It is very safe and the most common side effects are burning, redness, swelling and bruising. Most discomfort occurs in the first 24-48 hours.

PRP for hair stimulation has very low complication rates, no down time after the procedure, avoids the use of medications or hair transplants and has no daily maintenance requirements such as applying topical medications or taking pills. The negative side of PRP injections include the discomfort during injections and there are 10-15% of clients who will not respond. Science cannot yet tell us who will and who won’t respond to PRP injections.

The beginning of treatment starts with 3 treatment sessions every 4 weeks. Maintenance treatment sessions are then required to maintain results and are typically every 6 months. PRP treatments will not prevent hair loss for life and eventually will lose their effectiveness however, they can postpone the eventual hair loss. Results are typically seen after the second treatment, but you may notice increased hair thickness as soon as several weeks after the first treatment. The PRP injection works to stimulate the hair follicles, and this takes time for the new hair growth to be apparent.

Cost is based on the number of vials required to create sufficient PRP for the area needing to be injected. This will be discussed at your consultation visit.
